Volvo Construction Equipment Introduces Two New Compact Excavators: EC37 and ECR40

2024-04-03

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo) recently announced that it will be launching two new mini excavators into North America - the 3.8 tonne EC37 and the 4 tonne ECR40.

The two new models will replace the EC35D, ECR35D and ECR40D in Volvo's product line-up.

Whilst the EC37 and ECR40 share the same platform and components, the EC37 is a conventional top-frame design, whilst the ECR40 has a shorter turning radius, allowing it to operate in tighter spaces.

Both units are powered by Volvo's 24.8 hp diesel engine, which meets Tier 4 Final emissions standards without the need for a diesel particulate filter. In addition to the existing automatic engine idle function, the new models feature an ECO mode and automatic engine shutdown. When the engine idles for more than four minutes while stationary and not in gear, it automatically shuts off and does not log inactive time, allowing the machine to run more efficiently for longer periods of time, improving fuel efficiency by up to 10 per cent. This enables the machine to run more efficiently for longer, improving fuel efficiency by up to 10 per cent, while reducing maintenance costs.

The cab of the new mini excavator is more spacious, ergonomic and quieter. Slim corner posts and a wide plate glass area provide the operator with a better view. In addition, the footrest area and door area are larger.

Intuitive scroll wheels and easy-to-navigate HMI (Human Machine Interface) features provide control and adaptability. Operators can set and save customized hydraulic settings on the touchscreen. This feature remembers saved settings from multiple operators.

Volvo offers load-sensing hydraulics for mini excavators for smoother movement. "Hydraulic Thumb" is available as an option and can be operated accordingly via the wheel on top of the joystick. Other optional features include floating blades and LED work lights. The new undercarriage extension system provides stability by providing longer contact between the tracks and the ground, thus reducing the "rocking chair effect".

In terms of maintenance, Volvo has extended the lubrication interval to 50 hours. The engine and rear bonnet openings are also wider for easier access.
