High Reach Demolition Crawler Excavators: PC490HRD-11

2024-04-03

Komatsu recently launched the PC490HRD-11 high reach demolition excavator in the North American market. Equipped with a 362-horsepower Komatsu engine that offers six different work modes, this model is equipped with a telescopic boom that enables a higher operating range and greater digging depth.

With a 5,511 lb (approx. 2.5 tonnes) attachment, the boom length can be extended to a maximum of 104 ft (approx. 32 m); the tool control system can store precise pressure and flow settings for up to 15 attachments. In addition, the hydraulically retractable undercarriage design allows for narrower track track spacing for easier transport.

Komatsu says the optional K100 Quick Boom Change System enables manual-free boom changes in minutes. The system is configured with oversized hydraulic quick connectors that minimize return pressure and oil temperature without restricting fluid flow. The system is also equipped with a hydraulic drive pin mounted inside the main telescopic boom structure, helping to minimize the risk of damage to the equipment during reconfiguration.

With the K100, all connections, whether mechanical, hydraulic or electric, are made automatically without the need for hands-on intervention. According to Komatsu, the human-machine interface (HMI) ensures that the condition of the machine is known throughout the process and that the machine's behaviour is always predictable. At any time, the operator can exit the process and return to the previous state.

The quick changeover of booms via the K100 system will make contractors rethink the methods they use on demolition jobs. For example, long reach booms can be used on taller parts of a building; when greater demolition force is required, a quick changeover to a shorter boom can be made to introduce heavier, more powerful demolition tools. In addition, the same excavator can be loaded with materials for transport, saving on operating costs at the site.

Joystick control allows the cab to be tilted up to 30 degrees to maintain an optimum view of the work area. The PC490HRD-11 is also equipped with Komatsu's KomVision bird's eye view system to improve visibility of the safety zone around the machine. Optional LED lights further enhance visibility.

The PC490HRD-11 is fitted with 15mm thick replaceable bolt-on fixed side guards, which can be easily replaced if damaged; the whole machine also boasts an oversized boom lift cylinder with a 25mm diameter; and the underside of the excavator is also protected, with 9mm thick guards.

PC490HRD-11 The entire bottom of the machine is protected to prevent damage from debris on the ground. In addition on the high extension boom conditions, the PC490HRD-11 bottom structure is additionally reinforced in order to cope with the large counterweight and the very long leverage forces at the front of the telescopic boom.
